Drivers who’ve gotten tired of the typical road trip have a more adrenalin-pumping alternative—off-roading. Generally speaking, off-roading is driving on unpaved ground such as riverbeds, sand dunes, mountainsides, and even beaches.

While fun, driving on non-standard terrain does entail some risks. For example, you won’t have the smooth driving that paved roads offer, which means accidents are more likely to happen. To make off-roading fun and safe, keep these tips in mind:
Get Driving Lights
As you might expect, you won’t find street lamps when driving through off-road terrain and your regular headlights just won’t do. Before heading out, make sure to get driving lights that provide powerful illumination even in the darkest driving conditions (such as those made by Hella).

Be Judicious with Speed
Off-road terrain can be wildly uneven, and a sudden burst in speed might cause your vehicle to overturn. Of course, you might need additional speed to climb a hill for example, but slow and steady is the way to go.

Don’t Go it Alone
Have at least one other driver with you during your trip. That way, you’ll have someone to assist you in the event of engine trouble or accidents.

There’s a certain appeal to braving untested topography, which is why millions of people are avid off-roaders. By taking these tips to heart, you can keep yourself, your vehicle, and your friends safe and ready for the next adventure.

  1. This is some really important information for anyone planning on going off-roading. I especially appreciate your first point, about safety lights. Good, bright, LED lighting is the best way to both make sure you can see your surroundings, and that anyone around can see you. You don't want to be approaching another vehicle or hiker without them realizing. Thanks so much for writing!
